University sacks professor for taking students’ money

Date Posted: 2006-11-02

The popular Ryukyu University professor had a policy of issuing ¥100 fines to his students when they showed up to class late, a policy his young charges say is “perfectly fine with them.”

The University disagrees, and has fired him after telling him to “stop taking money from students.” The school brought in a new professor for the Engineering Department, sending the offending professor packing at the start of the new semester.

The 62-year-old professor teaching the Engineering Machine Systems class is asking “why has the university brought in a new professor? This class is mine.” He returned to the classroom to meet the new professor, who demanded to know “What are you doing here? In the middle of class you can’t be here!” The confrontation turned to a fight in front of students, who asked “What’s going on between the professors?”

The students’ loyalty is to the fired professor. “We line his class, even though he takes fines. His policy is very good” said one group of students. Others of the 50 students echoed “It’s all right. The ¥100 fine is nothing, and we follow him. We understand him.”

The canned professor said he didn’t intend to fight with his replacement, but “wanted to discuss the students with him. A lot of students like me and want to learn from me,” he noted, saying “they want to learn from me and the university shouldn’t take the class away from me.

He says he’ll file a protest with the university, because “It’s against the rules and an infringement on education freedom.” He says everybody knows the students should not be late to class, and points out the university should be working to reduce the problem of students being late for class.

The university says it is still considering whether to mete out punishment to the professor for his actions. Students say he should be reinstated.
