Okinawan people like to eat out in restaurants

Date Posted: 2002-07-13

People of Okinawa love to go eat out even when they grow older. That’s the result of a survey conducted by Dentsu Okinawa advertising agency.

The survey was conducted between Jan. 31 and Feb. 3 in Naha and Urasoe cities. 800 people between ages 15 and 60 were interviewed. The research found that 77 percent of Okinawans go eat out at least once in three months, and women are more regular restaurant diners than men. It also concluded that when people age, women continue to eat out more than men. One third of men over 50 go to Wafutei Japanese restaurant at least once in three moths whereas 40 percent of women of the same age group go.

Similar survey conducted in Tokyo found that people there stop going out after their 40th birthday. In Okinawa, people continue to patronize their favorite restaurants regardless of their age.

Surveyors at Dentsu also concluded that Okinawans go to restaurants to socialize, not only to eat. People like to stay out later than in other prefectures, and one reason to that is that the island is relatively small and a trip to home by taxi is not likely to cost a huge sum of money.

According to the survey, the favorite fast food restaurant in Okinawa is McDonald’s, followed by Mister Donuts, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Mos Burger and A&W. The favorite western style restaurant is hamburger restaurant Bikkuri Donkey, followed by Capricciosa, Gusto, Pizza House, Shakey’s and Tomato. Wafutei is the favorite Japanese-style restaurant here. Tonkatsutaro is the second and Katsuya, Atom Boy and Oshidori Sshi come next.
