New technology aids in drunk driver crackdown

Date Posted: 2006-10-27

A massive campaign to prevent drunk driving is picking up steam across Japan, and companies are snapping up instruments to make sure their drivers are not drinking.

Police are intensifying their crackdown, increasing the number of traffic stops and spot checks.
Alcohol detectors are aiding not only police, but trucking cargo companies, taxi companies and bus companies as well. The handheld devices are being used to test rivers before they get behind the wheel of a vehicle.

The problem, everyone says, is there are simply not enough of the units to go around. Backorders are plentiful as companies are increasing orders. Factories say they have depleted their inventories, and that it will be December before there new supplies available.

Truck transfer and bus companies, together with the cargo handlers and taxi companies, have placed orders for the next available batches.
