Man admits to murder, but police aren’t sure

Date Posted: 2006-10-19

A 33-year-old man is in police custody in Miyako after confessing to killing one man and seriously wounding another.

Miyako Police say they have doubts that Toru Kohagura is actually guilty, but they’re keeping him locked up while they investigate further. Kohagura claims he beat the two men, then stabbed them with a kitchen knife after they leveled false accusations at him. After that, he says, “I do not remember.”

Yutaka Tadamaga died of the stab wounds to his chest, while Jun Kazio is hospitalized in serious condition with abdominal wounds. The incident occurred in front of a convenience store near the suspect’s home.

Kohagura fled on a bicycle after the incident, according to police. Miyako police later found him three days later, hiding in a cemetery. Local citizens say they’re glad “a suspect was caught. It was a long three days.”
