Power grid failure causes massive power outage

Date Posted: 2006-10-13

A generator failure at a northern Okinawa power plant triggered power outages for more than 90,000 residents Tuesday afternoon.

Central Okinawa felt the crunch after one of three turbines powering the Kin Town Power Plant failed, shutting down service to areas from Kin Town south to Okinawa City, Kadena Town and Kadena Airport. Even parts of Nishihara felt the blackout, which lasted 35 minutes.

Okinawa Electric Power Company, which operates the plant, says the incident was the first since the plant went on line in 2002. No injuries were reported, but one woman was trapped in an elevator at Kadena City Hall. Traffic snarled as signals went dark.
