Photo exhibition highlights ‘Kindness to Animals week’Date Posted: 2006-10-13 Hateruma’s works are on exhibition at the Yaeyama Post Office in Ishigaki City. She won a contest at the Welfare Health Center of Yaeyama to win the display honors. The exhibition runs through Sunday. A touching tableau of Koyuki, a female dog, and a tomcat called Mimio, as they touch their noses is the centerpiece photo “A Sister and Brother”. Hateruma says “they are great friends now, probably because I am keeping them since they were only a year old.” The photo has attracted a lot of attention from postal patrons. Hateruma says she’s been protecting stray dogs and other animals since 2003, asking pet groups in Ishigaki City for help in locating owners for strays. She says she has placed 16 animals in new homes. “Just as dogs cannot speak, they have feelings the same as humans,” Hateruma says. “If somebody has a dog, I want the owner to keep it. If an owner doesn’t want pups, the animal should be give a contraceptive or a castration operation.” |
