Residents beautify Chuo Park Avenue

Date Posted: 2006-10-07

Thirty years ago, Chuo Park Avenue was known as B-C Street, a popular nighttime spot for American servicemen.

The Okinawa City shopping and night entertainment area was well known during the Vietnam Era, frequented by tens of thousands. In 1980, residents changed the street name to Chuo Park Avenue.

The four-blocks long area became a colorful 500 meters long street filled with white arcades and diverse, unique businesses. It remains the same today, with dozens of boutiques, restaurants, and night spots sharing space with retail stores and specialty markets such as Okinawa Market. It’s age is showing a bit though, and residents are taking steps to remedy the situation.

“This street has a lot of greenery, trees, plants and flowers, but it’s not beautiful enough,” says a woman who’s lived on the street for 40 years. She’s begun a campaign to clean the street and trim the tree branches, and is looking for help. Asked if it can make a difference, she says “can we make this street change in a nice way? Yes, we can.”

Businesses and residents say “traffic should be reduced and given additional speed restrictions so children can play in the areas of trees and swings.” Another says “there are a lot of open spaces on this street, so we should be planting green grass instead of pouring more concrete.” Another voice says “If we change to more green grass, people can sit and have good times with tables, benches, coffee and foods.”

The concensus is Chuo Park Avenue should be changed to a real park, where children can play and study. Residents and business leaders are looking for public opinions on how to make it happen.

They say the business from the nearby military bases is important for having fun and shopping, but that the community should benefit with a green zone too.
