Prison release celebration ends in return trip to jail

Date Posted: 2006-10-07

Only an hour after his release from prison, a man was arrested in Urasoe City and returned to a jail cell.

Police arrested the man on charges of stealing whiskey from a store. Asked why the man stole the bottles, he said “because I was so happy to get out of prison, I wanted to celebrate with my friend but I didn’t have money. So, I stole.”

The man had gone by taxi from Okinawa Prison to the store, where he bought several items, but hid the whiskey in his pocket instead of paying for it. After he asked the store clerk for an extra plastic bag, the clerk became suspicious and notified his manager.

The cashier gave the man a plastic bag, and the thief left the store. The manager followed, and watched the man take the whiskey bottle from his pocket and put it in the plastic bag. “Hey, you should pay for the whiskey too,” the manager said. He then called police, who took the celebrating ex-prisoner back to jail.
