New baseball stadium set for Onoyama Park

Date Posted: 2006-10-07

Onoyama’s decrepit baseball stadium is now relegated to the history books.

Itoman High School and Gushikawa Industrial High School on Saturday played the final game at the 46-year-old stadium on Naha City’s southside. “Okinawa’s holy place, and the people’s longing place,” said the captain from Itoman High School n a speech, “is Onoyama Baseball Stadium. We are so happy to play at this park, and look forward to seeing the new baseball grounds too.”

The final game, part of the 56th Nationwide High School Baseball Tournament, ended the Onoyama Park facility’s colorful history. Old and decaying, city officials finally decided to replace it.

Groundbreaking on the new stadium will take place early next month, with completion set for 2010.
