Traffic jams lead to 5km Highway 58 widening

Date Posted: 2006-09-29

Highway 58 is overcrowded with vehicles traveling through central Okianwa, and now officials are doing something about it.

The Prefecture South National Highway Road Office staff is explaining how new construction across five kilometers of roadway will result in wider roads that will eliminate traffic jams and promote faster traffic flow. The Chatan area from Isa T junction north to Kadena Gate 1 is being widened, with three lanes being expanded to four lanes.

Highway 58 will be 20 meters wider than now, accommodating the fourth lane in each direction. Prefecture staff says the Chatan area has always been crowded, but growth in the Mihama American Village area has really pushed traffic out of kilter. The ever-increasing north-to-south traffic flow made a difficult situation worse, and required the road widening project. An official says the area is soon to have an overhead highway, a two-lane expressway in the center to facilitate rapid traffic movement.

Road construction is affecting activities in the Camp Kuwae area, but officials say there’s little that can be done to ease the burden. Road construction, officials say, will not delay any of the land development on Camp Kuwae. The completion of the Highway 58 road widening project will ease the load, officials say.
