Date Posted: 2006-09-29

Okinawa’s population will swell by more than 3,000 in mid-October as the 4th Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival unfolds here.

The four-day festival begins October 12th, with activities spread across the island. Primary venues will be the Okinawa Convention Center, Ginowan Civic Gymnasium, Ginowan Seaside Park and Citizens Hall, the Budokan, Okinawa’s Prefecture Hall of Martial Arts, the Onoyama Comprehensive Sports Park and the Okinawa Prefecture Comprehensive Sports Park.

The last World Uchinanchu Festival was held here in 2001, drawing 2,397 participants from 17 different countries. Aside from the overseas visitors, the 2001 festival attracted an estimated 266,000 performers and local spectators.

On tap this year are traditional festival parades and receptions, a World Business Fair, World Bazaar, World Uchinanchu Symposium, and a variety of karate, kobudo and Ryukyu performing arts events.
