Protesters again block camp cultural researchDate Posted: 2006-09-29 The Nago City Board of Education tried to enter the Marine camp to do research on possible cultural assets in the area, but its members were blocked by demonstrators. Protestors are opposed to the base becoming home to the replacement airfield facility for Futenma Marine Corps Air Station, now in Ginowan. Two groups of researchers were planning to enter the base to inspect an area where new barracks will be constructed. “We need to research the spot to see if there are some important buried treasurers staying underground,” said a Board of Education member. “We have to find out, because it’s the property for everyone. The law says cultural treasures must be protected.” One opposition group protestor thrust himself underneath a car carrying researchers. Police arrested the man and pulled him from beneath the car. |
