Tomishiro City to choose new mayor next month

Date Posted: 2006-09-22

Tomishiro Cityís mayor has not one, not two, but three opponents for the post in an upcoming election.

The October 15th mayoral election is shaping up to be a confusing election, because three opposition party candidates are challenging the incumbent, who is a member of the Liberal Democratic Party. Itís odd, because there have only been two candidates, one from each party, since 1994. Tomishiro Cityís growth into a large city has spawned a number of opposition political parties, each wanting a piece of the political pie.

With the Gubernatorial Election upcoming in November, politicians are seizing the moment to attract attention with voters. The largest opposition blocks come from the Communist and Socialist parties, who tried to field a single candidate. That idea failed as the two sides couldnít agree to anything.

One critic points out the biggest problem is that the candidates donít seem to be focused on Tomishiro Cityís problems, but are posturing and talking about issues geared to the gubernatorial election set for November.
