Hit-and-run driver arrested for running over drunk pedestrian

Date Posted: 2006-09-01

A 46-year-old man is in jail, charged with fatally injuring a school worker after a night of heavy drinking.

Hirotetsu Tomoyose was arrested on tiny Iheya Village island earlier this week in conjunction with Friday night’s incident that ended with a man sleeping on a public street being run over. Hirotetsu, a Urasoe Industrial High School worker, had been drinking with colleagues, sharing a barbeque at a public hall on the island.

Motobu Town Police say after midnight Hirotetsu decided to drive his car into town. A witness said “there was a guy sleeping by the public hall side street. That man was drunk too, and was sleeping on the roadside, but it looked like the car driver didn’t notice him sleeping there.”

The witness told police “Hirotetsu just started the car from the public hall and drove over the man.” The victim was identified as Hideyuki Gima, 28, another worker at the same Urasoe Industrial High School. Police say Hirotetsu’s car dragged the victim more than three kilometers after driving over him.

“I didn’t notice him at all,” Hirotetsu told police, “and I did not even feel anything crash with the car.”
