Tourist lies to police; alleged he was robbed

Date Posted: 2006-08-25

Police responded to a distress call that a man had been robbed and beaten with a baseball bat in Naha City’s Minato-machi area.

When they arrived, the victim’s story didn’t add up for suspicious police. The man claimed to have been hit with a baseball bat, but officers couldn’t find even any bruises. The man said he’d been robbed of ¥50,000, but police weren’t buying it. After being questioned over and over, the man admitted he was lying. “Sorry, that was a lie. There was no robbery, and I did lie.” Police arrested him for lying and making a false police report.

Asked why he did it, the man confessed “because I spent all my money and I don’t have money to buy a plane ticket to go back home. “ He said he’d been in Okinawa August 7th through 19th, and spent everything. The man also told police that after he couldn’t find a job to make some money, he thought he’d use the robbery story so police would buy him a ticket for going back home.
