Local cop loses bag with data on criminals

Date Posted: 2006-08-18

Red-faced Okinawa City Police are canvassing local neighborhoods in an attempt to find a bag containing police information.

Officials say a police officer had the bag, but that it disappeared from the police station. Inside the bag is CD data detailing private information about criminals and a police investigation. A police spokesman says information on more than 300 people is contained on the CD.

There are names, addresses and telephones contained on the CD. Police say a 24-year-old policeman working the Chatan Police Box made a CD copy in violation of police rules. He reportedly took the CD in his bag, finished work and went to the locker room to change clothes. While in the basement locker room, he left the bag on a table.

Later, police say, the young officer went home without the bag, which also contained a laptop computer. It was heavy, officials say the violating officer admitted, so he left the bag for two days. When he went to get it, it was gone.

The original CD was in the Okinawa City Police Station, and officials are now contacting people whose names were on it. Already, police have apologized to 140 people.
