Hit-and-run driver kills man in Okinawa City

Date Posted: 2006-08-18

Police are searching for a vehicle involved in an August 11th accident that left one man dead.

Okinawa City police say Minoru Shimabukuro had just finished work performing roadside grass cutting in the city’s Matsumoto area when he was struck by a passing car. The 50-year-old landscaper had just finished placing his tools inside his mini-truck and was getting inside when he was knocked aside by the fast moving vehicle. Police say Shimabukuro was knocked to the ground. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Only one witness has been located, and the person says “a 2000cc type sports car with a spoiler on the bonnet” was the one that raced by. The witness told police the left door has damage. He also told Okinawa City Police “it might be possible that there was a Y-number plate on the car.”

Y-plates are special license plates issued to American servicemen. Okinawa City Police have asked military police to investigate the case. Anyone with information is asked to call Okinawa City Police, 098-932-0110, Extension 418.
