Youngster nabbed in Motobu arson case

Date Posted: 2006-08-18

A nine-year-old boy has confessed to setting to fires earlier this year in Motobu.

Police say two fires on a farmer’s property in May were the work of a young boy who “wanted to hear the sound of a police car or ambulance siren.” He admitted “It makes me something special. Yes, I started two fires.”

The first fire occurred on May 21st, burning a farmer’s field in Motobu, on Okinawa’s northwest coast. A second fire five days later destroyed the wood and steel roof of a barn. The boy told police he set the fires using a lighter and paper, then ran away.

Police had been investigating for weeks, and finally located witnesses who recalled having seen a young child near the burn area. From there, police say, it was easy to identify the child and confront him. There were no injuries caused by the fires.
