Local swimming pools repair faulty drainsDate Posted: 2006-08-18 An Okinawa Prefecture safety inspection of all island swimming pools began earlier this month following the death of a seven-year-old girl in mainland Japan. The youngster had been sucked into an improperly capped pool drainpipe. All swimming pools here were investigated, and officials found three with drain imperfections. They were identified as Chatan Town’s Chatan Park Inside Pool, Kadena Town’s Kaneku Kuihim Park Inside Infant’s Pool, and the Okinawa City Comprehensive Park Inside Pool. The three swimming pools are now closed, and will remain so until new safety inspections are complete. Officials explained that the drain pipes have lids fastened by bolts, and welded into place. In these several cases, the drain lids were not properly and safely affixed. A prefecture spokesman says “Okinawa City’s Comprehensive Park pool is not a problem. Actually, it is basically following government safety rules. The outside of the lid there has been fasted by a bolt and screw, but wasn’t double bolted. We want more safety by insisting upon double locking bolts.” The repairs were to have been completed by the beginning of this week. Chatan Town and Kadena Town say they are both working quickly to get the double-locking lids in place. Their goals are to be open for business by this weekend. |
