Nasty weather lashes south but skirts Okinawa

Date Posted: 2006-08-11

Typhoon Saomai pounded the southern reaches of Okinawa Prefecture last night as it skirted the main island, headed for Taiwan and China.

The typhoon’s 90 knot winds buffeting the region as the typhoon churned across Miyako, Ishigaki and Yonaguni Islands, dumping heavy rains and inflicting damage on agricultural crops. Saomi is the third typhoon of the season to lash the southern areas of Miyako and the Yaeyama island group.

Okinawa, on the northern fringe of the typhoon now passing just north of Taipei enroute to a Friday rendezvous with mainland China, is getting some rain and high winds, but has avoided the typhoon grade winds.

Two other tropical systems are keeping weather forecasters hopping this week. Tropical storm Bopha slammed its way across Kaoshiun, a southern Taiwan city, yesterday. Tropical storm Maria is ricocheting across the southern coastline of mainland Japan today. Both systems had lost much of their velocity over the 24 hours before reaching landfall.
