Beach party Saturday at Camp Schwab

The invitation’s on the table for Saturday’s Schwab Block Party, and you’re invited.

The northern Marine Corps base opens its gates to everyone on Okinawa as it hosts the party along its beach. Oura Wan Beach will be the venue not only for swim and splash fun, but for sporting events including a bench press contest.

The block party runs noon to 6pm, when beachgoers can dabble with personal watercraft, water trikes or a banana boat ride. A DJ will provide music to entertain throughout the afternoon. Marine Corps Community Services, which is sponsoring the event, says the block party will be the perfect opportunity slam in beach volleyball, where awards will be given to first, second and third place finishers.

Late registrations for the bench press contest will be accepted at the beach on Saturday between 1~2pm. Entry fee is $15, and individual awards will be presented to winners. Weigh-in will be 2~2:40pm, followed by participant briefing at Oura Wan Beach. Sports event information is available at 645-2654.

Beachgoers will have opportunities to win prizes during the afternoon, as two roundtrip tickets to Hawaii are up for grabs. United Airlines and Omega Travel are putting the tickets on the block. Admission to the Oura Wan Beach Block Party is free.

Organizers say that while everyone on Okinawa is welcome to the festivities at Camp Schwab, no glass containers or pets will be allowed on the beach.

Further information is available from MCCS Special Events, 645-5828.
