Tokyo aquarium promotes tourist visits to Okinawa

Date Posted: 2006-07-28

A new aquarium is now established in Tokyo’s Ginza District, in front of the Sony building.

It’s mission is simple! Display tropical fish which inhabit the Kerama Islands, located about 30 kilometers west of Okinawa’s main island. The 9.7 ton aquarium was put together by Sony, which since 1966 has annually had a “Things in Summer” theme. This year’s theme is “Let’s preserve our beautiful ocean”, keying on Okinawa as a central tourism location for summer visitors. The aquarium will be operational through August.

The 5.4 meters wide, 1.5 meters deep, 1.2 meters high aquarium is summer home to 1,200 tropical fish that normally swim in the Okinawa waters.

Miss Okinawa, Akiko Tokuda, gave participants an orchid branch as a symbol of “the season of marine sports beginning in Okinawa.” She encouraged Tokyo residents experiencing the aquarium to “visit Okinawa, an island for healing.”
