New consul general agrees on local bases consolidation

Date Posted: 2006-07-28

The new US consul general on Okinawa has told the governor he supports efforts to return American bases to Japan, and to consolidate remaining facilities.

Kevin Maher, in a formal courtesy office call with Governor Keiichi Inamine, said he’ll push for rapid return of bases, and transfer of American Marines from Okinawa, as spelled out in an agreement made earlier this year, calling them “beneficial for Japanese-US ties.” The governor concurred that the changes are essential.

The consul general did not spend time with the governor on either the controversial deployment of Patriot missiles to Okinawa, or on the contentious Futenma Marine Corps Air Station relocation problems.
