Umbrellas encouraged to protect sun worshipers

Date Posted: 2006-07-28

A summer campaign to encourage people to use sun umbrellas when basking in Okinawa’s tropical sunshine is under way.

“Let’s raise summer umbrellas, even for men!” is the catch phrase for the campaign, which wants to help people avoid summer fevers, and to promote job efficiency. The head of a local group orchestrating the campaign, Mr. Toguchi, says he’s been using a sun umbrella for more than ten years, calling the harsh sun “kind of scary”, says he would like to see everyone using umbrellas when in the sunlight for more than a few minutes at a time.

The president of Okinawa Monorail, Mr. Kojyo, has weighed in supporting the campaign, noting that Okinawa is the only subtropical prefecture in Japan, a fact that warrants umbrella use. He is now looking at establishing sun umbrella rental stands at each of his monorail stations. Kojyo’s secretary says there are a variety of good umbrellas ranging from heavy duty to protect against wind, and colorful fashion models, too.

Information on the new campaign is available from the Okinawa Monorail project office, 098-859-2689.
