Beached whale saved And helped back to sea

Date Posted: 2006-07-22

It was an unusual sight along the seaside road in Uruma City.

A two-meter long whale had beached herself and appeared injured. The whale was bleeding, was weak, and couldn’t swim.

Tourists, shop owners and staff, the Coast Guard and local firemen came to the rescue, pulling the whale from the beach into chest deep water. After supporting the whale for a while, she began to swim on her own, and finally slipped free of her rescuers and moved back into the deep waters.

“I have yet to see a whale come so close to this new sea road,” said one rescuer. “She was so damaged. I hope she’ll get well and swim for a long time.
