Okinawan captures junior ladies golf title

Date Posted: 2006-07-22

The name Miyazato is known to Okinawans who are proud of their local golf gal who’s been sensational since hitting the international scene less than two years ago.

Now, Ai Miyazato from Higashi Village is joined by 16-year-old Mika Miyazato, who captured the World Junior Championship at Toury Pines Golf Club in San Diego last weekend. Mika, a Konan High School student, captured the Grand Champion Title on the par 74 course firing a 16-under-par 280.

The championship round was a battle between Miyazato and Junka Kaneko, who finished second, one stroke behind. Mika lost to Junka on the 12th hole, but scored an eagle on hole 13 to tie it up. On the 18th hole, Mika stroked a birdie to pick up the victory. “I’m so happy to win,” said Mika Miyazato, “because in the Japan Women’s Amateur Junior Golf Tournament I had lost to her. It was frustrating, and I thought I’d lose to her.

That final hole saw Junka missing on a three-meter putt, while Mika gently guided her six-meter putt into the hole.

Ai Miyazato won the World Championship in early 2005 in South Africa, and has moved on to currently hold the number 11 position on the ladies tour. Mika Miyazato is the first Okinawan, though, to ever win the junior championship.
