Sea birds make rare appearance in Naha City

Date Posted: 2002-07-04

A flock of over 100 plovers (Beniajisahi) has appeared in Naha City’s Aja Port to the delight of local bird lovers. According to Masakuni Yamashiro of Okinawa Wild Bird Society it is quite rare that these birds come to a city. “Usually these birds come to Okinawa in the summer and build their nests on uninhabited small islands where they live in large colonies. I’m actually very surprised to see them here.” The birds have white body and black head with red bill. “They look like they have applied make-up to get ready to perform some folk dances,” Yamashiro said.
