Futenma Marines anger Okinawa City citizens

Date Posted: 2006-07-14

Two drunken Marines damaged and destroyed decorations and displays in the Okinawa City Chuo area over the weekend, drawing the wrath of locals who witnessed the actions.

The two Marines, 21-year-old Carl Clinton and and Nicolas M. Ganon, 23, were arrested and charged with destroying private property at the Ginten Street Shopping Mall in the Chuo area. The mall had a star-festa display, with ‘Fukinagashi’ decorations using origami, flowers and paper ribbons.

The two GI’s were en route back to Futenma Marine Corps Air Station when they saw the decorations and said “Let’s break these.” They did, and witnesses called police. Local businessmen say the actions have not only damaged physical property, but also the good will between the military and Okinawa communities.
