Temporary homes being built for landslide victims

Date Posted: 2006-07-08

Four families who lost their homes when an apartment building was damaged by a landslide last month will soon have temporary quarters.

Portable prefabricated houses are being constructed on the Nakagusuku Elementary School’s Kita Uehara Branch grounds. The apartment building was evacuated more than three weeks ago after heavy rains over Okinawa caused a landslide that caused the building to shift, sending occupants to a nearby Community Hall.

Weary residents are asking officials to “Please hurry up and build the houses.” The new houses, which are being constructed on concrete pads, are only 30 square meters, but will serve as interim homes. Officials say the new houses, which will be strong enough to withstand typhoons, will be finished August 2nd. Construction began more than a week ago.

The four families are expected to move in August 4th. “I want to move away from Community Hall, even for one hour,” says one displaced family member. “Now I don’t have any place to move.” Four other families have already moved to other apartments, while another two have moved into their parents’ homes.
