Okinawa lawmaker 2005 income tops Y60 million

Date Posted: 2006-07-08

Seiji Nakamura, a member of the House of Representatives, has the best income record of any Okinawa member in the Diet.

A report required by law that lawmakers reveal their annual income was released this week. It shows the average lawmaker garners •24,310,000. The top income was reported for Eisuke Mori of the Liberal Democracy Party in the House of Representatives. His income was •205,360,000.

Nakamura told the House of Representatives his 2005 income was •60,770,000. Junshiro Nishime was a distant second at •24,490,000, followed by Kantoku Teruya at •23,170,000.Musician-turned-politician Kina Shokichi was fourth with •22,660,000.

Others topping the list were Chiken Kakazu with •20,290,000, Masahide Ota, Seiken Akamine and Kousaburo Nishime, all with •19,240,000.

Kina has actually lost revenues by becoming a lawmaker in the Diet. His Naha music club has suffered a downturn because heís not available to sing and perform at the downtown bistro. Without live music, he says his few performances have adversely affected his business.

The Dietís published annual income is •20,000,000, but most Diet members have other businesses. Some are doctors, lawyers or real estate professionals. Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumiís annual salary is •38,120,000.

Officials point out, though, that politicians have many expenses covered by official business. Most donít have to spend money for air travel, trains or busses, and many meals and entertainment expenses are also taken care of by government funds.
