Ginowan residents plan to sue over MCAS noise

Date Posted: 2002-07-04

A group of people living near MCAS Futenma in Ginowan City announced their intention to file a lawsuit against the government of Japan for what they say are intolerable noise from helicopters operating in the base and over their homes. They say they would demand a stop to helicopter landing practice in order to curb the noise. The suit that the group plans to file with the Naha District Court in October, would be the first noise pollution suit filed against the facility.

The group plans to ask the court to order the Japanese and U.S. governments to put an end to helicopter flight practice over residential areas as well as takeoffs and landings early in the morning and late at night. It would also demand compensation for noise pollution. The group hopes that eventually about 100 to 200 people would join the suit as plaintiffs.

People planning the suit claim that the noise makes it difficult to sleep, watch TV or even have a decent conversation. They also claim that the noise often disturbs classes at elementary and junior high schools in the area.
