Police worry about seductively short schoolgirl skirts & socks

Date Posted: 2006-06-23

Schoolgirls are wearing shorter skirts and offering a more sexy appearance on Okinawa.

The fashion style worries police, who say they’re noticing a rise in attacks on the teens even as they walk in public places. There were two incidents this week in Tomishiro City and Naha City. Officials say a high school girl walking a Naha City street at 11:10pm was molested as a man grabbed her from behind and grabbed her breast. She reported the incident, but the man escaped. The girl described the man as about 170cm tall, with a short haircut and wearing white shirt and long pants.

A 14-year-old girl was the victim in Tomishiro City, fondled by an instructor at a special school for techniques. Police nabbed him, and he’s confessed “Yes, I did touch her.” He’s facing charges of indecent assault on a minor.

Public reaction is mixed. “If school girls don’t want adult men to touch them, they shouldn’t wear such short skirts or loose socks,” says one adult who blames the girls for tempting men. Girls insist they must wear the clothes to avoid being taunted and teased by schoolmates. “We can’t stop wearing short skirts,” says one young girl. “If I don’t wear the short skirt, I’m teased and called ‘crazy girl’”. Another says that girls wearing long skirts and normal socks are considered ‘strange’ by their schoolmates.

Police want high school and junior high school girls to lower the hemlines and curb the sexy styles. The girls are resisting, saying they want to look nice and that men should curb their urges.
