Awase activity runs afoul of new mayor

Date Posted: 2006-05-27

Mitsuko Toumon says she hasn’t visited the Awase Tidelands yet, but that hasn’t stopped her from issuing a call for construction to stop.

The new Okinawa City mayor, whose policies clash totally with those of former mayor Masukazu Nakasone, is enlisting support from many different groups to visit and get involved with the ‘Committee Group for Protecting the Awase Tidelands’. The group is demanding “constructions companies stop developing the area”.

“I’m going to set up an exploration committee soon,” she says, “and am going to ask about what to do.” She wants a limited number of citizens for their opinions, according to committee member Tomo Kobashigawa.

“This construction isn’t needed at all,” Kobashigawa says. “This doesn’t even have the agreement of citizens, making this construction development wrong.” He says it will cost citizens a lot of money in tax revenues, and is calling for a referendum on use of the Awase Tidelands.

“I’ve never talked to the prefecture and the national government,” Toumon says while admitting she’s never even been to the construction sites. “I must go and have a look, then I’ll tell you what I’m going to do,” she adds.
