Measles outbreak may hit epidemic proportions here

Doctors are issuing appeals for residents to “please get shots against measles” as the number of cases rises.

Measles are being reported in large numbers in the Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba, Kanagawa and Kantou areas. Okinawa has not been spared, leading medical officials to call for all children over one year old to be vaccinated.

The Prefecture Doctors Association and the Naha City Doctors Society says “Measles might be spreading over all Japan,” with more than 100 cases already logged in Chiba and Ibaraki Prefectures in the last month alone.”

Doctors warn that pregnant women are at particular risk.
