Naha mayor licks cancer

Date Posted: 2006-05-27

Only weeks after rumors circulated he was dying, Naha City’s mayor walked into his office Saturday and returned to work.

Takeshi Onaga had been hospitalized since April 9th after being diagnosed with stomach cancer. Rumors began circulating from the left that he was critically ill, and on the verge of death.

“From now on, I’ll tell everybody to be careful of your own health,” he told his staff at City Hall. “You’d better get your body checked once in a while.” Onaga told employees doctors had removed most of his stomach during the seven-week ordeal. He says he lost 10kg (22 pounds), but “I’m alright now, and more and more am becoming healthier.”

Onaga will now preside over the Naha City Assembly meeting next month, when Assembly Chairman Masamitsu Kudaka will introduce a motion to slash the body’s size. He wants to cut the 44-member assembly by four people, and Kudaka says he has 29 assemblymen in agreement.

If it’s approved, the ordinance will remain in effect until elections in 2009.
