Pedestrian bridge now meets safety standard

Date Posted: 2006-05-27

A pedestrian bridge spanning a toll road in Tomishiro City is now certified for traffic.

The bridge built by the Road Organizing Office of the Okinawa General Bureau Southern Port Office was completed more than a year ago, but the pedestrian bridge was deemed unsafe because it had no protective fence. The 39-foot-high walkway crosses over the Tomishiro City Taira North Subdivision Housing Area Citizen and Comprehensive Park, above the Naha Airport toll road opened four years ago.

Officials had tried to open the pedestrian span earlier, but fears of an accident forced them to rethink the plan and keep it closed. Instead, they turned to the prefecture to make a fence. The prefectural government rejected the request because of costs and budget shortfalls, leaving the bridge closed and dark.

The Prefecture General Bureau Office and Tomishiro City finally negotiated an agreement a few months ago, providing funds to move ahead. The city was tasked with construct of a fence, and also installation of lights across the lengthy bridge.

The General Bureau Office says “we’ve never made a pedestrian bridge with fences or lights before, and never expected to on this one.” It noted that the unplanned budget monies were appropriated and Tomishiro was asked to share the costs.
