Miyazato bogeys out in American tournament

Date Posted: 2006-05-22

Bogeys instead of birdies were Ai Miyazato’s downfall in the U.S. golf action last week.

The Okinawa native played miserably, failing to make the grade at the Kings Mill Resort, where the American Women’s Golf Tournament was playing out. Fellow Okinawan Shinobu Moramizato fared better, making it to the final round to finish one over par and in the 42nd position. Miyazato finished 72nd.

Miyazato blamed the fast greens for her poor action, saying it was so “hard that the ball went so fast I couldn’t judge my shots.” Saw little hope for her making the finals when she “realized that without birdies there were no possibilities.”

It was a dismal performance for the young Higashi Village woman, who had begun the first round only seven notches from the top. It was raining and the course was soft, factors she said were in her favor.

The second day was sunny and warm, and the course had dried out. Tee shots went great, straight to the greens. That’s where her putting failed her.

On the first hole she missed a two-meter putt for a double bogey. The same happened with a 2.5 meter putt on the second hole. Ditto on the 10th, 14th and 17th holes. Shots as short as 1.5 meters went awry.

“I don’t like hard greens,” the disappointed Miyazato told reporters. “My ball goes too fast. I can’t control the distance to the holes.”
