Consul General picked for new Washington posting

After more than 2 ˝ years, the U.S. Consul General in Naha is heading stateside.

Thomas Reich, who took the Naha Consulate post in September 2003, is bound for an assignment to the State Department in Washington D.C. He will be the Officer in Charge of Conference, Bureau of East Asia at the State Department headquarters.

Reich was deeply involved in the Japan-U.S. talks on military realignment issues, focusing on reducing the burden to Okinawans. He spent considerable time on the Okinawa and Futenma troop issues.

Reich’s replacement will be Kevin Maher, now Director of Security for the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo.
