Drunken GI busts up local music club

Date Posted: 2006-05-22

An American sailor is in custody, charged with violence, drunkenness and property damage at an Okinawa City live music club.

Gabriel Pena was arrested by Okinawa City Police after he went on a rampage at a Chuo area live house, behaving violently and threatening musicians. Pena, assigned to a Navy engineering squadron, apparently became angry and picked up a chair, throwing it at a musician. The musician avoided the flying chair, but it struck musical instruments.

Authorities say a base guitar and an acoustic guitar costing Y530,000 ($4,860) were destroyed in the incident. Customers in the club were not injured during Pena’s outburst.

Police say the 21-year-old sailor had a high blood alcohol level, and that Pena is denying everything. “I don’t remember why I was at that live house at all,” he reportedly told investigators. “I don’t remember. Did I throw the chair? No way I did it.”
