Kadena Air Base take-offs, landings exceed 70,000

Date Posted: 2006-05-13

Kadena Air Base, the largest American airbase in the Pacific, annually has more than 70,000 take-offs and landings.

That report from the Director General of the Defense Facilities Administration Agency has the Kadena Town Mayor concerned. Iwao Kitahara made the announcement on the flight activities at Kadena during an Okinawa visit, but didn’t elaborate on whether the numbers are increasing or decreasing. Kadena Town’s Mayor, Tokujitsu Miyagi, says his town “hasn’t confirmed the numbers,” but “would like to evalutate if there’s been a decrease.”

The numbers are important as plans are developed to begin Japan Air Self Defense Force joint training and flight operations at Kadena. That activity, announced by the DFAA, is expected to significantly increase air traffic over Kadena. “We’ll decide later about relocating the training,” Kitahara said this week. He indicated, though, that plans will move forward to having JASDF use Kadena once some F-15 fighter training is reassigned to mainland Japan locations.
