Nakijin man dies after being knifed

Date Posted: 2006-05-13

Golden Week revelry in Nakijin Village, on Okinawa’s northwest coast, ended in tragedy when two longtime friends fought.

The two men had been drinking when an argument escalated to a heated debate, then violence. An emergency call to police was “Help, please. My friend just stabbed a guy in the stomach.” The victim, Yasuhide Kanazu, was found by ambulance paramedics laying on the ground, bleeding from his stomach. The 62-yearold died shortly after arriving at a nearby hospital.

Police say Yasuhide’s friend admitted the crime, telling them “I’m sorry I stabbed Yasuhide.” The 58-year-old assailant said they’d been drinking with three other friends, talking and having fun. Somehow, he said, a quarrel began and Yasuhide smacked one of the men on the cheek.

“Hey! Yasuhide! What did you do that for?” the accused murder recounted. He said he went home and got a knife, then returned to Yasuhide, who was sitting with the house owner. “Now I’m going to kill you”, witnesses recounted.

Appeals for calm by Yasuhide were rebuffed, the two men went outside and fought. Witnesses say Yasuhide was trying to take the knife away from his friend, but the assailant refused to give up, stabbing Yasuhide in the stomach.
