Foster Library to hold “Peeps” show during April

Date Posted: 2006-04-21

The Camp Foster Library is holding a Peep Show – but unlike the more burlesque varieties, this show stars the lovable, sugary confections that are a part of Easter celebrations across the world.

When Peeps were introduced in 1953, it took more than 27 hours to create just one of the delectable treats. Each Peep was individually crafted by squeezing marshmallow through a pastry tube. Today, it takes a mere six minutes to hatch one of these marshmallow chicks. But while people have been known to use Peeps for pizza toppings, they aren’t just for eating. Artists use the marshmallow chicks, bunnies, and other seasonal shapes to make hats, wreaths, and pieces of art, while amateur scientists use the brightly-colored treats to conduct peep-ology research.

Fun facts about Peeps will also be available at the Peep Show. Did you know that more than one billion Peeps are made each year? Or that it would take a stack of 8,000 Peeps to equal the height of the Sears Tower in Chicago? Just Born, the company that manufactures Peeps, produces enough of the treats annually to circle the Earth twice.

More than a dozen Peeps displays will be at the library during the month of April, so come watch as Peeps visit outer space, go on parade (including a marching band with instruments and a majorette in costume), visit a tropical island, and fall in love. Little Bo Peep and her flock of sheep will also be on display. Visit Foster Library’s Peep Show during April to learn more fun facts about these marshmallow confections and to view staff-created Peep artwork! For more information, call 645-7178.
