Sukuta residents affirm accepting of live fire training

Date Posted: 2003-07-18

Nago City area residents have endorsed continued U.S. military use of Range 10 for live fire exercises, including the use of heavy machine guns, as long as all safety precautions are followed. The Sukuta District residents, affirmed in a Sunday meeting they will accept life fire training. All area residents had been invited to the meeting.

The Sukuta District village headman admitted that some residents had voiced concerns about live fire drills on the firing range. “We have heard some objections to our decision to accept the training, but we've decided it is acceptable as long as the Marines conduct the training in strict accordance with their safety manual,” the headman said. He added that the district is requesting that the district people can monitor the training.

The Nago City Assembly had earlier passed a resolution backed by Nago Mayor Tateo Kishimoto urging the district residents to reconsider their decision to accept the training, but the district residents decided to go ahead. “It is natural for a local community to have its independent opinion,” the village headman said after the meeting.
