Cancer forces Onaga from gubernatorial raceDate Posted: 2006-04-15 Takeshi Onaga has been diagnosed with stomach cancer. It is in the first stage, and he wants to obtain prompt attention. The cancer was first diagnosed in early March, and doctors have urged he get to a hospital quickly to begin treatment. The announcement ws a blow to the Liberal Democracy Party, which had Onaga as its candidate for Governor this Fall. “Since I have cancer,” Onaga said this week, “I don’t think I can take part in the election.” Onaga deferred treatment during March because of a very busy calendar. The mayor presided over selecting new staff, completing a new budget, creating new policies and closing the financial books for the year. “I feel very sorry that I must take a break,” Onaga said, adding “my staff can do all the work very well instead of me, and I’ll be back after one month.” City Hall says the mayor’s work will be covered by two deputy mayors. |
