Realignment talks leaks irritating Japan officials

Date Posted: 2006-04-01

Japan is accusing the Pentagon of deliberately leaking details on obstacles to the troops realignment plan being negotiated and finalized, in an effort to garner public support.

Stories appearing in media reports the past ten days offer details and insights into the unpublicized, and sometimes secret, discussions between Japan and the U.S. The $10 billion price tag for the move is one example, stirring anger from Japanese Defense Agency officials and agitating Japanese citizens who’re being asked to shoulder the costs.

One upset Japanese official says “we won’t buy their argument on their own ground,” talking about the American insistence Japan cover 75% of the realignment costs for moving 8,000 Marines from Okinawa to Guam. He says the way Americans are leaking information, “you can’t call the relationship a real alliance.”
