New roadhouse will aid travelers in need

Date Posted: 2006-04-01

Travelers to southern stretches of Okinawa’s main island will soon have a helpful place to stop and relax.

Tomishiro City and the Prefecture General Bureau Office have announced a plan for a modern road station at Tomishiro. The new facility, ‘Iitoko Champuruu’, means a multiple good place. The facility will combine a reception center, a car rental office, restaurants, convenience stores and even a relaxation area.

Officials say the facility, which will open in March 2007, will give tourists a place to stop and rest during bad weather and typhoons. The roadhouse will be along Route 331, at the Tomishiro bypass at Toyosaki.

The government is kicking in half the Y3,000,000,000 construction cost, with the remainder coming from Tomishiro City and rent-a-car companies. The roadhouse will feature more than 2,000 rental cars, a radio station, rest rooms and a range of restaurants and convenience stores.

Houmei Kingjo, the Tomishiro mayor, says “this facility will attract a lot of tourists to Tomishiro. From here, it will lead to more tourist business.” The Tomishiro Chamber of Commerce says it will move its office to the new site, and work with tourists who can’t find hotels. An official says there will be facilities to accommodate overnight tourists for one or two nights while waiting for weather to clear, or hotel rooms to become available.
