USAF spars with officials over Shimoji Airport use

Date Posted: 2006-03-24

Shimoji Island airport is occasionally used by US military aircraft and helicopters, mostly as a refueling spot, and local residents don’t like it.

The Air Force at Kadena Air Base February 17th notified authorities it would use the Shimoji Airport as a refueling stop for planes the next day. Kadena told the Okinawa Prefecture Airport Management Division it wanted “to utilize the airport for refueling only if air refueling cannot be accomplished due to weather conditions”. It was sending a KC-130 aerial tanker and two HH-60 helicopters.

That afternoon, the Prefecture asked Kadena to not use the airport. Prefecture officials say the Air Force’s request was originally made the 15th, asking to use the facility on the 17th, then asked for a one-day extension. They voiced opposition.

A day later, Kadena officials again changed plans, indicating plans to use the airport late morning on the 19th. Hours later they canceled the request, saying the three aircraft traveling to the disaster site in the Philippines had been refueled by aerial tankers.

Locals are opposed to both U.S. Air Force and Japanese Air Self Defense Forces using the base, “ignoring the true intents of the residents.”
