Uruma City protests a proposed waste facility

Date Posted: 2006-03-17

Okinawa City has no space left in its Kurashiki Industrial Waste Disposal Facility, and the owner is asking a neighboring community for authorization to build a new plant.

Uruma City, Ishikawa and Mihara residents are flatly rejecting the idea. Hundreds turned out Sunday to protest the proposed new facility in their backyard. A local community action leader, Yoko Nakasone, says they’ll “protest to this company, so they know we need clean land and clean nature,” adding that “we need to protect the environment.” Nakasone says “we never want Okinawa city’s trash here.”

As 700 residents marched and demonstrated, Ishikawa City mayor Tsuneo Chinen said “You can never build the facility here, because all of us are against your plan.” He says the company can’t develop a new waste disposal facility without their opinions being heard.

A Kurashiki facility official agrees they can’t build without permission, but points out “the next problem is where to dispose of the waste.” Okinawa City has little time left to find a site for a new facility. The current Kurashiki facility is nearly full.
