Residents go to court to stop Iriomote resort construction

Date Posted: 2003-07-18

Residents on Iriomote Island, often called Japan’s last wilderness, are turning to the courts to block tourism expansion. Taketomi Town occupants and their supporters nationwide want to stop construction of a resort hotel now under construction. It is scheduled to open in February.

Kinsei Ishigaki of Taketomi Town, leader of the group opposing the development project, says “Iriomote’s unspoiled nature is the property of every people of the world. It is important to preserve it in its natural state.”

Real Estate Company Unimat, which is building the property, claims it is perfectly within its rights to build the resort. “There is no problem with the construction. We have followed meticulously every rule and law, we had all necessary permits before we even started the construction, and we will complete it as scheduled,” a Unimat spokesman said.

All 100 Iriomote residents took the construction company to court back in March in order to stop the construction. That case is still in the courts while the construction work continues. Ishigaki became convinced that a larger group is needed to win the case. He put together a group of 291 people, mostly through Internet from all regions of Japan, who pledged to support the court case.

“We have gathered people who are against the construction of the resort and want to preserve Iriomote’s nature. Everyone of us believes that it is our human right to preserve this piece of nature,” Ishigaki says. “Iriomote is the home of many endangered and rare species of animals, birds and plants whose very existence becomes endangered because of this hotel,” he claims.

Meanwhile, the construction work continues at full speed. Supporting facilities such as streets, beach, shopping center and other facilities are near complete, and the hotel itself is more than halfway up.
