Local companies demand U.S. stop building housing

Date Posted: 2006-03-03

The US government is constructing new housing units on bases for its military personnel and families.

The All Okinawa House Leasing Association, made up of real estate agents and companies serving Americans looking for off-base housing, are not happy. They’ve told the Okinawa Prefecture Government the projects must stop, because it’s hurting their businesses.

The Association has met with the Governor’s Executive Office director, and also with the Naha Defense Facilities Administration Bureau, reminding them “Agencies leasing houses depend upon the base economics”. For most of their members, serving American personnel has been their livelihood. The Association has roughly 4,800 units under its control, but 1,000 are empty and its members are “in distress”.

The Association wants cancellation of all housing construction within the bases. The Governor’s office promises to examine the complaint.
